(The introduction of Dr. Schofield Memorial Scholarship Association of Korean-Canadians)

 

(캐나다 동포들 중에는 아직도 스코필드박사기념장학회(회장 이창복)와 스코필드박사추모재단을 혼동하고 계시는 분들이 많으십니다. 사실 이 두 단체는 성격이 전혀 다르기에, 2017년 현재까지 장학생들을 포함하여 동포들께 사실을 알려 드리기 위해 이 영문 글을 작성했습니다.-필자 주)

 

 Dr. Frank Schofield came to Canada from his native England at the age of 18. Working on an Ontario farm kindled his interest in the health of animals, and he soon enrolled in the Ontario Veterinary College(OVC). By then, he was an outstanding veterinarian who was nationally and internationally known for his research in animal disease. He was a professor and research scientist at the Ontario Veterinary College, University of Guelph in Canada.  after his retirement, this humanitarian taught and undertook missionary work in South Korea where he is honoured for his contribution to that country's democratic development.

 

On March 1st 1919, the Korean people demanded their Independence from Japanese colonial rule at the mass demonstrations but the Japanese policemen and military forces brutally tortured and the imprisonment of Korean demonstrators. at that time, the Korean people suffered under Japanese severe oppression. Dr. Schofield resisted against the Japanese imperialism and militarism and he also reported Japanese brutal repression and colonial policy against Korean people to the world. Dr.Schofield is a missionary and an eminent Canadian scholar. also he was the outspoken critics of Japan's Imperial rule. Dr. Schofield was one of the greatest man in our history. February 22, 2016 was the 100th anniversary of his arrival in Korea (Feb 22, 1916- Feb 22, 2016). The Tiger Schofield Commemoration Society held a celebration ceremony at the Seoul National University in Korea.

 

The Dr. Schofield Memorial Scholarship Association of Korean-Canadians was founded in 1999 in Toronto, in memory of Dr. Schofield's great contribution and dedication to the Koreans during the Japanese occupation of 1919. With our main objective, which was to honor and show appreciate to his devotion and sacrifice, we instituted the Dr. Schofield Memorial Scholarship Association of Korean-Canadians in order to support his alma mater, the Ontario Veterinary College, of the University of Guelph.

 

Our association is comprised of dedicated board members whose annual contributions has been the backbone of our scholarship fund. So far, we have awarded Dr. Schofield Scholarship to thirty six students of Veterinary College, the University of Guelph up to now . In 2009 The Pan Asia Food Co  and The Sam Jin Global Net Co established new scholarship awards for the Dr. Schofield Memorial Scholarship Association of Korean-Canadians.  All past recipients are currently working at prominent universities and research institutes throughout Canada and the USA. The award is $2500.00 per student and the total $7500.00 will be awarded annually to three students who has been recommended by the Veterinary College, of the university of Guelph.

 

A new wonderful building for the Veterinary College, University of Guelph is now completed with the Dr. Schofield -Korea Seminar Room.  Under the agreement between the University of Guelph and Dr. Schofield Memorial Scholarship association of Korean-Canadians, we have displayed a bronze bust of Dr. Schofield, which was sculptured by the Umian Co in  South Korea.

 

We would like to especially thank Dr. Prescott PhD and Dr.Jeffrey Wichtel PhD who supported us so much to make our endeavors successful. We believe that by encouraging promising students from the Universty of Guelph, that we can honor and bestow our heritage to our future generation of  Korean-Canadians, and also continue to honor and express our gratitude to Dr. Schofield.
